The Lowdown

This Kenny Wheeler-Inspired Jazz Composition Symposium is run by the Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra and it is supported by the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon Jazz Society and the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival. It is a unique gathering of jazz composers, performers, and scholars. This event will examine Kenny Wheeler's profound influence on the jazz world, blending academic exploration with live performance to honor his groundbreaking compositions.

From engaging keynote addresses to ensemble performances, this symposium offers something for everyone, whether you're an avid fan of jazz, a musician, or a composer inspired by Wheeler's work.

Book Launch: Song for Someone: The Musical Life of Kenny Wheeler

Nick Smart will present the newly released biography, co-authored with Brian Shaw, Song for Someone: The Musical Life of Kenny Wheeler, which explores the life and music of Kenny Wheeler. Based on over 130 interviews and extensive research, the book details Wheeler’s journey from his early years in Canada to his impact on European jazz and his lasting influence as a composer and musician.

What is the symposium registration fee?

Registration is $100 for adults and $50 for students. Performers, presenters, and composers do not pay a registration fee, but they will need to pay a $25 application submission fee.

First you need to pay your submission application fee of $25.

Then you can submit your materials (recordings, scores, or abstracts) via the application portal. Links are preferred over file uploads.
